2022 Hill River Gewürztraminer
2022 Hill River Gewürztraminer
2022 Hill River Gewürztraminer
From a low-yielding single block planted in the cool climate of Hill River, our first ever Gewürztraminer has a lovely pale colour that belies how exotic, opulent and complex the wine is. It has an arresting nose of lychee, citrus, honey, spice, Turkish delight and rose which really draws you in. The palate opens with generous, but fresh, tropical fruit which, after a moment, is joined by more spice that gives the wine tremendous texture and warmth, and really sets it apart from other white wines (“Gewürz” meany spicy in German). And this texture, generosity and spice can make it a fabulous match with spicy and/or extravagantly flavoured foods. Try it with Thai red or yellow curry and spicy Chinese and Indian food – it has a particular affinity for ginger. It also handles particularly smelly cheeses and is a good match with chicken or duck liver pâté. Also, a good partner to roast goose. And try it with a cinnamon-infused apple crumble – it’ll depend on how sweet the pudding is but it it’s at the “drier” end of crumbles, then it can be an excellent match. And with so much going on aromatically and in flavour terms, it’s a fascinating wine to drink and contemplate on its own.
