The Doozie represents a cellar selection rather than a vineyard selection; as the individual parcels of Riesling come in through vintage all are given the same high level of care. The 2010 Vintage is a blend of Riesling from six different vineyards with the greatest contributions coming from four vineyards: one on a ridge above Stanley Flat provided the greatest component, and just under a quarter each came from a vineyard in the hills southwest of Auburn, from a vineyard perched on the east-facing slopes above Watervale, and from a vineyard north of Clare, near the racecourse.
Pale yellow with striking green hues, the 2010 Doozie has a highly complex nose: every sniff seems to bring forward a new aroma – there’s some very intense limes, and some very ripe, but zesty, apples, some semi-dried apricot, there’s lychee, blackcurrant, passionfruit and a dusting of spice. Above all, it’s very intense and very vibrant. The palate is full of apple, blackcurrant, lemon and lime fruit, finishing with mouth-watering bucketloads of the very finest zest available to humanity. A mere pup now, with all the exuberance that that implies, with a long and rewarding life ahead of it. Drink it now with a chicken and mango salad.
It’s a Doozie: huge, decadent and a touch extravagant.
